Overrated Relief Pitchers

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Ryan Franklin. 2nd half implosion in 09 is too much too ignore. Off speed stuff wasn’t there and fastball flattened out. Not good for a closer.

Francisco Rodriguez. Wow. Talk about losing his stuff. Major control problems, and his slowing down fastball doesn’t explode thru zone anymore.  He’s on a cliff waiting to fall. Will he get you saves? Absolutely, but not elite anymore and will annihilate your ERA and WHIP for a relief pitcher.

David Aardsma. Fantastic movement, and can bust hitters up high who can’t get around on his stuff. BUT, walks too many, a sign of bad things to come for where he will be drafted.

Carlos Marmol. NOBODY hates walk more than Lou Piniella. Marmol is a walk machine with stuff that is out of this world. He just can’t get it over the plate, which means he may not last as the closer.

Underrated Pitchers

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

All of these pitcher’s have ABILITY, and we see talent in their arms, but have either had unfortunate injuries, bad luck and/or will finally be in a position with their team to showcase their talent. There are some familiar names in here whose stock has dropped due to these reasons.  We are not projecting where they will pitch in the respective rotations. They all will bring value even if it is in a setup role.

Overrated Starting Pitchers

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

What exactly are overrated pitchers? Are they pitchers that are not good anymore? No. This is a fantasy baseball website, so our overrated pitchers are overrated based on where we thnk they will be drafted, and do not believe they are worth being drafted that high. The perfect example of an overrated pitcher is Carlos Zambrano. As a Cub fan, you have to love him. He can win you a division. He can win you a playoff game, but in fantasy baseball he is a big name who gets drafted early based on reputation, with strikeout totals heading south, and ERA and WHIP heading north. So enjoy round one of our overrated pitchers, there will be more coming soon.

Kevin Millwood.  Has been losing his fastball for years now. Leaves too many balls out over the plate, and being away from Mike Maddux his pitching coach in Texas will hurt.

Matt Latos.  Solid rising fastball, and good movement, but still needs innings at major league level to be where he will be drafted. Outstanding keeper, not worth an early or mid round pick.

Joba Chamberlain.  Slight drop in velocity from 08 to 09. Don’t like the 3 year rise in WHIP from 07-09 which is a sign he throws and doesn’t pitch.

John Danks.  Gave up 28 home runs in 09 with bad pitch selection. The concern here are the innings pitched(395)over last 2 years, that usually means some trouble for a young arm.

Clayton Kershaw.  Great keeper, but not ready for explosion yet. Still has control problems at times and the sub 3.00 won’t be there, and that is one of the main reasons he’ll go high.

James Shields.  The 17 point spike in WHIP last year is a concern, and was losing command of his fastball in 2nd half of 09.

A.J Burnett.  Losing some control last couple of years and other than k’s isn’t worth the maddening inconsistencies he brings, and of course injury risk.

Edwin Jackson.  Has had one good half of a year in last 5. Changing leagues won’t help. Stuff was so dull in 2nd half.

Jair Jurrjens.  A return of a mid 3.00 ERA is coming, and a one run spike is big for where he will be drafted.

Carlos Zambrano. Control problems force him to throw fastballs over the plates that don’t move like they used to. An average pitcher now. His slider just stays flat now.
